The Spartanburg Day School varsity girls’ basketball team went 2-0 during the Southside Christian Sabres Thanksgiving Tournament on November 21st and 22nd.
The Griffins defeated the Lady Wildcats from Blacksburg High School during the first round of the Sabres tournament by a score of 68-41. The Griffins used defensive pressure and balanced scoring to outlast the Lady Wildcats.
Senior Kaylee Owens led all scorers with a season high 18 points. Juniors Lauren Oakes and Kathleen Babb added 15 and 14 points respectively. Sophomore Lauren Lee chipped in 13 points. Senior Kate McBride had four points and sophomore Ariana Muehlenbein scored three points. Freshman Taylor Ball, making her first appearance of the season, scored 1 point to round out the scorers.
The Griffins took on the host Lady Sabres from Southside Christian for the championship during night two of the tournament.
The Griffins played solid defense and were very unselfish on the offensive end of the court as they took a steady lead over Southside Christian, outscoring the Sabres 28-13 in the first half.
Spartanburg Day school was able to coast to a 45-21 win. Lauren Lee led all scorers with 13 points. Lauren Oakes added 10 points. Kaylee Owens chipped in eight points. Kate McBride scored six points. Kathleen Babb and Ariana Muehlenbein both had four points a piece to round out the Griffin scorers.
